Defend Public Health (DPH) is a volunteer-driven social movement of public health researchers, practitioners, healthcare workers, advocates and allies fighting to build power to win proven, science-based public health policies. We believe that everyone has the right to what they need for a healthy life, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity.

 

We are seeking an experienced community organizing leader to serve as the DPH Organizing Director. They will drive the development of state-level DPH leadership teams capable of running increasingly powerful and effective grassroots campaigns that win real material public health and policy victories, significantly grow the numbers of people organizing within the public health constituency, and get better at organizing skills and practices.

 

Specifically, the Organizing Director will be responsible for:

  • Recruiting and developing a core community organizing team (some volunteer, some contractors) within the DPH leadership structure that can coach and support the network of emerging and growing state-level chapter organizations.
  • Enabling the constituency to meet specific organizing strategic goals across the DPH movement: goals that win material victories, grow the constituency, and develop leaders in measurable ways.
  • Managing the community organizing team’s modest budget; deploying resources to best build people power within the constituency. 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • 5 years of community organizing experience leading campaigns and developing organizing leaders.
  • A track record of successful campaigns that won strategic goals, grew numbers of people participating, and developed leadership capacities within their people.
  • Proficiency with using organizing data to drive campaign outcomes; experience using organizing database tools such as Action Network, excel and other tools to manage lists.
  • Communication skills, responsiveness and flexibility, ability to work across teams.
  • Excellent software skills (e.g. MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

 

We particularly welcome those who have: 

  • Experience with or strong ideas about how to develop membership-led organizations with dues-paying membership structures.
  • Experience planning large scale organizing conferences or meetings with 150+ people. 

 

Pay: This is a six (6) month paid independent contractor role, with a possibility for extension.

  • Compensation will be for 6 months, 40 hours per week, $50,000 total. 

 

Location: Fully remote.
