Late Sunday night enough Senate Democrats agreed to a deal with Senate Republicans to reopen the government. This deal did not address the major concerns Defend Public Health has been advocating about. It did not even temporarily restore the insurance premium credits – the central Democratic demand. But now the bill will go to the House of Representatives and Democrats in the House have a chance to say: “NO!”

Late on October 10, the Trump Administration took advantage of the current government shutdown to illegally fire thousands of federal workers, including critically important CDC employees. Some were then reinstated, but vital staff across the CDC working in surveillance, health statistics, policy and communications remain affected. With negotiations on a short-term continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government open past September 30th at a standstill, Defend Public Health believes that House and Senate Democrats MUST play hardball if we are to prevent the further erosion of public health, restore the power of the purse to the Congress, and protect access to health care for 24 million Americans.
