Operations Manager

Operations Manager

Defend Public Health is a volunteer-driven social movement of public health researchers, practitioners, healthcare workers, advocates and allies fighting to build power to win proven, science-based public health policies. We believe that everyone has the right to what they need for a healthy life, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity.

We are seeking an experienced nonprofit/social movement operations manager: someone who knows how to keep documents and people organized, is great with a schedule and finding meeting times, someone who can keep track of a budget and can design a newsletter. This role is crucial for a social movement that is hitting its stride and growing by leaps and bounds monthly. We’re moving fast and building a movement that will reverse the devastating harms to the people’s health wrought by ongoing destruction of our public health infrastructure  and help us build systems of care and support that advance the right to health in America. Because our work is driven almost entirely by volunteers, including members of the coordinating committee and others who have hectic schedules in addition to their work with DPH, this person will serve as a central connection point to keep activities coordinated.

Successful candidates will have exceptional administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Experience working with health and social justice organizations, or an interest in or passion for working on public health is a plus. This is a key role at this stage of Defend Public Health’s evolution; the operations manager will ensure our all-volunteer coordinating committee, state teams, and topical committees are all connected, reinforcing each others’ work, and moving us toward our goals.

Specifically, the operations manager will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Defend Public Health (DPH) Coordinating Committee, including managing internal communications, developing agendas for calls and meetings, coordinating periodic travel, managing expenses, compiling a weekly Mailchimp newsletter and tracking developing issues that arise in our Google group and committees.
  • Managing the DPH technology systems (e.g. MailChimp, ActionNetwork, google suite, etc.), coordinating with outside consultants, including acting as system administrator and assisting the coordinating committee to use a suite of technology products for our movement building work.
  • Representing DPH to partner organizations and the public by responding to emails that come to the info@defendpublichealth.org email address.
  • Providing administrative support to the DPH coordinating committee, senior staff and others as needed.
  • Managing grant and contract files. Help maintain financial files.
  • Reviewing invoices and processing check requests.
  • Posting expenses in financial software, including credit cards and consultant payments. Maintaining grant tracking spreadsheets with data from the financial system and assisting with preparation of grant financial reports.
  • Assist DPH’s Communications committee in maintaining our website.

Qualifications

  • Experience in an administrative role, with a record of increasing responsibility.
Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Resourceful and creative.
  • Flexible, able to respond to requests from multiple colleagues, and work with individuals with different working styles.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to prevent or productively manage conflict with a proactive approach to closing communication gaps.
  • Strong comfort with and enthusiasm for all things IT. Proficiency in Action Network, Mailchimp, Google groups and docs, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint hoped for.
  • Experience and comfort working with spreadsheets and numbers, and interest in financial management. Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Experience with Quickbooks or other accounting software as well as website management preferred.

Pay: This is a six (6) month paid independent contractor role, with a possibility for extension.

  • Compensation will be for 6 months, 20-25 hours per week, $48 per hour.

Location: Fully remote.

How to Apply: Please send a brief cover letter, CV/resume, and 2-3 professional references as attachments in an email to jobs@defendpublichealth.org. Please indicate “Operations Manager” in the subject line of your email.

Benefits: Currently as a contractor role, there are no health or benefits offered at this time.
