Stop Medicaid Cuts
House Republicans have unveiled their updated plans to strip away Medicaid funding. A reminder: Medicaid covers 41% of births and over 60% of nursing home residents in the U.S. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) assessed that the proposed Medicaid cuts would leave at least 8.6 million fewer people covered. What's more, in combination with the expiration of the Affordable Care Act marketplace subsidies, the CBO estimated that a staggering 13.7 million more people would be uninsured -- and this may well be an underestimate because it assumes that states can make up more of the difference than is likely to be the case. This would needlessly put millions of people in harm's way.
To emphasize the importance of preserving Medicaid, we request that members of Defend Public Health who are in high-priority districts and states call their members of Congress and tell others in these districts to do the same. The Health Systems and Health Insurance Working Group of DPH has identified 35 Republican House districts that are highly competitive (within D+6 and R+6 according to the Cook Partisan Voter Index) as well as fairly Medicaid reliant. Also identified are some key Senate seats that are up for reelection in 2026. The House members are:

You may call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and they will connect you with the appropriate member. We also encourage you to write to them. To be maximally effective, it is important that you contact YOUR member. With the House of Representatives especially narrowly divided, we just need to peel off a few House Republicans, emphasizing the life and death stakes of preserving Medicaid.
