Defend Public Health Policy on Use of Artificial Intelligence

Defend Public Health strongly discourages the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the production of any op-eds, articles, presentations, policy briefs or other materials. AI-generated content may be false, misleading or inaccurate; contain copyrighted material; inadvertently disclose confidential information or data; or even be made up (“AI hallucinations”). DPH is responsible for any material that is published under its name.

However, we recognize that sometimes AI is useful for background research, confirming specific information, and/or graphic designs.

DPH’s AI use policy: requires (i) disclosure to at least one of the Communications co-chairs or persons they designate of any use of AI (and for what purpose) in the creation of materials for DPH prior to publication or dissemination of content that claims to be on behalf of DPH; and (ii) attestation that the content has been verified as accurate and does not violate copyright. All factual content created with the assistance of AI must be verified with original sources.
